In Venice the word maschere (masks) immediately brings to mind the famous carnival and old public holiday proclaimed for the first time with an edict in 1296. Entirely devoted to fun and festivities, carnival is when Venetians and outsiders would flood throughout the entire city to have fun with music and wild dancing.
Since 2002 in Venice, Le Maschere has been the name of the elegant restaurant in the Hotel Splendid Venice, frequented by Venetians and guests from all over the world. It is located in calle delle Mercerie near St. Mark’s Square and the Rialto. Behind Le Maschere is hidden the typical atmosphere of Venice, evoked by the glass dome in the charming Sala Campiello lounge and in the warm water-level lounge bar. And behind Le Maschere are hidden creative menus based on fish from the lagoon and the northern Adriatic, or first class meat, served with vegetables grown on Sant’Erasmo island, known as the garden of Venice.
The chef recommends the tris of raw fish, the characteristic prawns in saor and his selections of delicate seafood risotto, in order to discover the true essence of traditional Venetian cooking.
